How To: Clean The Brute Carbs

Well since i had some time on my hands today. I thought i would tackle a Carburetor rebuild. I picked up this carb locally. Now that i am done with it, what shall i do with it? My BF650i doesn't need one. Anyways, i thought it came out really good compared to when i first started. You be the judge.

First i gather everything i would need for the task.

100% lemon juice, distilled water, dremel tool, gloves, socket set, philips screw driver and Harbor Freight Ultrasonic cleaner.

[/IMG]

[/IMG]

[/IMG]

I then grabbed the carb and started to dismantle. Not sure as to what i would see in the inside. This thing had been sitting for a while and i could tell by the outside it would be ugly.

[/IMG]

First i started to take the 2 carbs apart. This is not as hard as it looks. Just get your area organized and have space. But before i started i poured about 8 - 10 ounces of lemon juice in the Ultrasonic cleaner and started to get it heated. Here are pictures of the dismantling of the 2 carbs.

First take of cover. Held on by 2 philips head screws.
[/IMG]

Once off, remove the gold nut and the cotter pin at the other end of the arm. Put someplace together and dont lose the cotter pin and small washer.

[/IMG]

[/IMG]

Now remove the 4 philips screws holding the cover in place. Once the screws are removed and put away, remove the cover from the 2 carbs. Just move it around and it will come off.

[/IMG]

Now flip the carbs over and disconnec the fuel lines and remove them. They are held in place by 2 philips head screws and a brace. Put somewhere safe. Once removed pulled the fuel line connectors out.

[/IMG]

What it should look like after disconnected.

[/IMG]

Now that you have the 2 carbs apart. Time to dig in and get to work.

First carb #1

I thne took out the jets and put them in the now hot lemon juice. I set the timer for 8 minutes. I pulled them out put them in distilled water and them blew them with compressed air.

While i had those jets and A/F screw in lemon juice i took the other carb and took that bowl off. And this i how it looked. It is the one on the left.

I took the jets out, the float out (set aside) A/F screw and threw them in the Ultrasonic cleaner as well. Set for another 8 minutes. And this is the result after about 10 minutes.

I then dried them off with compressed air and set aside. I then started to work on the Carb body and slides. Slides were in bad shape as well as inside of carbs. Before i put the carbs in cleaner. I add distilled water to it. If not lemon juice will make your carb body turn black. It is a 4:1 mix ratio.

Carb bodies and slide pics.

I put the carbs in the ultrasonic cleaner a good 20 minutes. I did one at a time. While one was in there i was polishing slides. Used my dremel tool and polishing pads for dremel.

Onces both carbs were done in the Ultrasonic cleaner, i tooked the dremel to them. And got them as clean as i could. I am pleased with the end results.

I was not worried about the outside as i was the inside. Just take your time and have your manual ready for when you need to reassemble if you are not sure.

All in all it cost me $4 for the lemon juice and water and about 2-3 hours of my time. I would love to hear your opinions.

You can boil the lemon juice/water mix, but for the price of the ultrasonic cleaner($24.99), its worthwhile to buy it. And, when their site is through with maintenance today, check out this link for a 20% off coupon on a single item.... http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1066275/

I'll be swinging by HF this weekend to pick one up.....

Phreebs/P425, sorry if I shouldnt link to that coupon, just figured people on here could use the coupon code....expires in april btw.
