My buddy's brute with a teryx swap keeps breaking belts very fast. Any ideas??? Has clutch kit and weights. What y'all think?

Gonna need to be a lot more specific than that....

Are you saying it has a teryx motor? What are the clutch specs? What is he doing when the belt breaks?

Correct. Its a 07 brute but has a teryx motor in it. Running a Pink/almond spring setup and has the aftermarket weights also. The gearing inside the motor has the factory teryx bevel gear but is running a brute thru shaft and brute gear on the thru shaft, so its not quite as geared low as a stock teryx but lower then a brute.. It snapped 1st belt in half and the 2nd belt only made 2 rides and it just ripped it to pieces. The 2nd belt was that XTX belt. Going to try another OEM belt. Not hard riding when they broke just normal cruising. Everything looks good on the clutchs and seems to be working properly when giving throttle and watching them with the cover off.

Thats a very mild clutch set up.... IT shouldnt be busting belts... hows the deflection, sounds like it might be too tight.

sounds like the belt is too tight to me also.. either that or something is wrong with the clutch sheaves... maybe something is pinching or cutting into the belt??

There is.. Its in the how to section. Under changing secondary spring, written version. And, honestly he is NOT running a good enough spring for 32" backs.. Thats probably his problem. He needs a red secondary. That almond might as well be a stock spring with 32" backs.

i think he dont have enough spring even though he has around 7 or 8% gear reduction with that teryx/brute bevel .. i would run at least a lime green but def a red.. i would also check deflection thats more than likely the culprit

Any one know if the belts are different between the rex and brute but i do think that secondary spring is way to soft for those tires.

thats a good point .. is he running a teryx clutch ? witha brute belt ?? if so try a teryx belt . that might be the problem .. cause on mud throwers it shows brute belt number is xtx2217 .. and a teryx belt number is xtx2240 .. that is the part number for the dayco xtx belt so if it has teryx clutch it needs teryx belt and vise versa

Went to local dealership today and even though the teryx and brute have diffferent part #s the belts are identical and the same. If you look up both bikes in an aftermarket belt they are the same part # also. He was running an almond and red secondary setup before and the bike was all gear and no torque and the belt was getting hot. Is there such thing as the belt being to tight cause it seems as if its still getting hot with smaller springs in it. We didn't check deflection with a straight edge but used a measuring tape and by pushing down on the top of the belt its pretty tight, only wants to move right at an half inch. Should we pull the secondary back off and put the red back in it? We have a maroon primary also and can take the pink out.. Would adding grease to moving parts on secondary help any??

Proper deflection on the Brute or Teryx is critical along with maintaining the correct resistance pressure for the load...as in springs for tire size. You might need more for that size tires, but that pressure comes with higher heat so..if its snorkled, might do what you can to get it some more air. Some turn the 90s into the wind where others actualy put a small fan in the tube.

As for deflection, I use a straight edge, a modified blunted screw driver, some needlnoise vicegrips and a caliper that measures milimeters. I take the reading and lock it at the bike, then measure it at the bench. Here is a pic.

Maybe the clutches are out of alignment. The teryx has a longer secondary shaft on it so if your using brute secondary it might throw it off or something of that nature.

I agree with Brute650i. If there outta line that will cause major issues

If the belt deflection is only 1/2", that's pretty tight! Should be around 7/8"-1"... If I remember right..

When he puts the bike in gear, does it try to move without throttle? If so, it's way too tight...

And I also agree that the alignment will cause issues...
