The very first thing to check is the motor mounts...especially the lower one. Many have get loose, egg-out the holes and let the engine rock under power which pulls on the shift linkage. My 2006 was one of hundreds that did it...and it only popped out of high. Do it too long or under enough power and the shifter fork on the drum bends...and that means a complete tear-down. Check the mounts now...all of them..including the plates on the back mount.

Just a side note- that fork can also be bent if someone shifts it while still moving so..
